Racial Stratification and Education in the United states: Why Inequality Persists

In this article that I've read Ogbu argues that School performance gap maintains how it is because the forces of racial stratification. A school district wanted to prevent from blacks and whites to get together so they got the black lowest test score to the district which made even a larger gap. The problem of Racial Stratification is that the school performance gap is limited to poor blacks who are living in the inner cities. Stated that students who have parents that completed four years of college wouldn't do well in school than students who have parents that didn't even finish high school. the gap was because of where they live which was in the suburbs.

3 ways in which racial stratification enters into African Americans
1. through societal educational policies and practices for example denying blacks equal education
2. perceived and treated in the specific schools they attend
3. perceptions and responses to their schooling
i think black and whites should be equal. if social stratification wouldn't exist now, there wouldn't be people ranking people for how much they know. blacks could have the same education as white so they can have a chance in getting a job.

The Hispanic Dropout Mystery: A Staggering 30 Percent Leave School, Far More Than Blacks or Whites. Why?

Hispanic students nation-wide is 30 percent nearly three times the rate for whites and twice the rate for blacks. Hispanics that were born here was the highest percentage than those who weren't born here. Language is one reason that Hispanics weren't successful. some live in poverty which causes for Hispanics to dropout Peer pressure causes to drop out as well.
I think hispanics dropout because students judge then by their race,or parents dont even support their kids. Poverty has become a great issue in our lives.

"people like us" (documentary)

I know this blog is late...

This documentary title People like us was about class, how they struggled and their range throughout America. We are usually ranked by the clothes we wear, the type of car we have, how we communicate with others, how much money we have in our income,, types of friends, our education and a lot more. i remmmber we discussed this in class, how people can just say something just for what they see.. like I can have an iphone but be broke and have a wack job. In the video there was this nice lady who was working in burger king earning minimum wage, working hard but for a fact she isn't going nowhere because she doesn't earn as much money as she wants too. Class can be classed by their social status and race. inequality still exists in America..

Deviant Subculture

A subculture is a group that evolves with in a domiana culture, always more or less hidden and closed to outsiders.
There's this Mexican gang who share the same norms, same language that I do not understand at all, the same symbols that they only know what they mean and hand shakes as well. They mostly have the same tattoos which are in their chest,, arms or their necks saying what gang they are in. There is mostly males that are in the group. They might look all bad but when it comes to family and following laws they obey. All Mexicans wear baggy pants with shirts that are up to their knees and its either color blue or black and with Jordan's. Most of the gang hang out together most of the time and they are mostly members that are either in high school or dropped out of school. They all speak one language which is Spanish and have the slang words. They are the one that have a easy way to get drugs since they have contacts to drug dealers and have a place where to smoke it at. They are the ones who start problems for no apparent reason as well and sometimes start with their own members.

Men and Women

"A call to men"

Its about men being thought to be strong, courageous, tough, dominated, or have no emotion, no fear, exception of getting angry. Tony Porter had said that men are in charge and women are not and men lead and we follow. That men are superior and women are interior. Women have less value, are property of men and are sex objects. He said there's something called a men box where it tells us how we can define what it means to be a men . Tony said that it would put men down if someone tells a men that he's acting like a "women".  Towards the ending of the video he had said that he asked a nine year old boy, what would life be like if there such thing as a men box. The boy said "life would be free"

"Killing Us Softly" (1979)
Women are advertised everywhere and had a negative impact in women. These ads influence women, they tell women they either have to be skinny, sexy or revealing. Women feel guilty and ashamed when they fail to have the ideal look. It said failure is inedible because the ideal is based on absolute flawlessness. In advertisement there's no women that have lines, wrinkles, no scars, no pours and blemishes. It also said that if we are not beautiful, thin, rich or successful, it's because we are not trying hard enough. This thing of being so called "perfect" had lowered women's self-esteem and also influences how men feel about real women they are with. The media had turned women into objects not as humans or as sex objects. Women who are involved in the media either have a disorder, are forced to have sex, are pregnant. Media had influenced women that they need to be perfect.

Gender Socialization

The active learning of the socially acceptable attitudes, traits, and behavior that are seen by one's society as appropriate for males or females. Men and women have different social norms such as men have to be tough and women type sensitive.  People who see girls acting the complete opposite that girls should be acting they are call "tomboys" and boys who cry and are very emotional may be called "sissies" Media had influence everyone in some way .

Nonverbal communication

Nonverbal communication is from our body movements, gestures, and facial expressions.
There was one day when I was with my mom, she was talking to me about my friends thinking that they are a bad influence for me, I just roll my eyes and shrug my shoulders. My mom was like so confused, asking me what I try to say to her by doing those movements. I told her what it meant, rolling my eyes is like saying what ever I don't care and shrugging my shoulders is like "and".  Some people is the society can express themselves just by making body movement like jumping around with a smiley face which can mean she can't wait for something or she's just very happy. Gestures can be wavy your hand to either say hello or goodbye.  There's also times when I see people that I know, I just smile at them to make sure they don't think I'm ignoring. A smile can mean so many things, maybe pretending you're happy, saying hi sometimes.

Every one here in this world has some routine that they do in their own country, its either waking up and saying good morning to your parents or taking off your hat as soon as you walk in the house to show some respect. Well about two months ago my cousins from Ecuador had came to New York. Whenever they come over, my parents made food for everyone. When my parents are done serving it in plates, we all sit in the table and of course we wait until everyone sits, we stay quiet and choose whose going to pray but usually my three year old cousin does the praying.(Its so adorable) My family has this routine or however you want to call it to pray before we eat, it either you praying by yourself or doing in a whole group. We all do these to have some consideration on the person who made the food and God who is the most important. I remember when we were all together, we were getting to eat, just because I took a piece of bread, I got the attention of my little cousin, she's like "Did you pray". There's not a day when we do not pray for our food. Its just to thank God that we have food in our table which some people out there that are starving with no food at all.
We also have to say "bendicion" which is to give us our blessing, we say it either when we say hi in the morning or before we leave somewhere. It's something called having respect for the one who raised us our whole entire lives. My parents get mad when i don't say it in the morning, they be like (why u didn't say "bendicion"). Its a big deal for them.

About me =)

There's not much to really say about myself. Well I'm 18 years old and I'm Ecuadorian but I was borin here in U.S.A. I go to college, its my second semester freshman year majoring in criminal justice. I'm very shy in front of people and I do not like to speak up in front of people, i tend to get nervous at times. People think I'm loud because of the way speak, that's just the way i just am. I like to go play handball and volleyball at the park with my close friends. My future plans are going to the Marines to serve the country for four years, still deciding if I should go for not, for me is way to hard to leave my family. My goal right now is just go to school and find a nice stable job so i can gain experience since I do not have none at all. I'm just a normal girl like everybody else that has very big dreams. I'm trying my best so I can go forward in life with positive thought in mind.
